Getting sketchey

As you know i'm a huge fan of sketches, they always get me inspired. Luckily for me two of my favourite manufacturers are now running sketch challenges on their blogs so i have even more of an excuse to play along with them! i worked on a few over the weekend.

First up, this sketch from the Sassafras blog designed by Marcy Penner.

All products: Sasafrass

i scaled this one down to 8 1/2" x 11" and i mixed 3 different lines from Sassafras, which just goes to show how easily their lines work together!

Next up this sketch based on a layout by Lory Bucaria for the new weekly feature on the Elle's Studio blog.

Papers, Butterflies, Sticker, Pin: Jenni Bowlin Studios, Glassine Envelope: Pink Paislee, Alpha Stickers: Cosmo Cricket, Cardstock: Core'dinations, Tags: Elle's Studio, Other: Twine, Pearl Stickers, Tiny Attacher.

i flipped the sketch for this one and did my own thing with it. To get those sanded squares on the grid, i created a mask using my square punch and a scrap piece of card so that i could control where i was sanding. Then i hand stitched around them with twine.

It's funny, but I have "discovered" sketches recently. I didn't bother with them for ages, thinking they were somehow "cheating" or "lazy"... but you know, I have become so busy in recent months, that sometimes using a sketch is the only way I'll get any scrapping done, as it shortens the design process and leaves me time to concentrate on the photo, the choice of papers, embellishments etc and the journalling. If I had to come up with a layout design too, I'd just give up, because I wouldn't have time for everything.
So suddenly it doesn't feel "lazy" or "cheating", to use a sketch, but a wonderful Time Saver!! And now I've done it a couple of times, I don't feel that it's cheating at all - the result is still my own work!
I love what you have done with both these sketches. You haven't stuck to them like glue, but used them as springboards for your own ideas. The "Pina Colada" page is fun and cheerful; the "Pretty" is just gorgeous, with those sanded squares, cute bakers twine edgings, lovely little envelope, sweet pops of pink and flowers. I don't think you cheated - they are fab and definitely all your own work, with just a little help to start you off!!

Love both of your layouts! I created one for the sketch from Elle's too I still need to photograph it. I'll have to go over to the Sass blog and check the other out. Thanks! Hope you have a fab week!

I've been playing about with some yellow twine, but I haven't thought of stitching with it! Love it.
